What most people ask first

What level of care is needed?

What are the financial implications?

Who is responsible for what?

While You Have Time to Prepare

Have the care conversation while everyone is calm

Discuss their wishes: where do they want to live as they age? What kind of care do they want? What do they NOT want?

Why this matters: Having this conversation before a crisis means you're following their wishes, not guessing under pressure.

Ensure legal documents are in place

Power of attorney (financial and healthcare), advance directive, will/trust. All must be signed while they are mentally competent.

Why this matters: Without these, you may need court-appointed guardianship — expensive, slow, and stressful for everyone.

Organize their financial information

Bank accounts, pensions, Social Security, Medicare, supplemental insurance, long-term care insurance, debts, monthly bills.

Why this matters: When care is needed, you'll need this information immediately. Gathering it during a crisis is painful.

Research care options in their area

In-home care agencies, assisted living facilities, nursing homes. Visit some before you need them urgently.

Why this matters: Each option has dramatically different costs and quality of life impacts. Research now, decide later.

Do Now

Assess their current medical and daily living needs

Can they manage alone? Do they need help with meals, bathing, medications, driving, finances?

Why this matters: Understanding the true level of need drives every other decision. Be honest with yourself.
